𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗪𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗬𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝘂𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 “𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗣𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲”
One of the toughest parts of leading a company? It’s when you’re caught in that weird in-between spot — not quite sure which way to go. You’re torn between chasing big growth and holding tight to what you’ve already built.
It’s a messy place.
Numbers pull one way, people pull another, owners want different things, and the market doesn’t make it any easier.
On one side, you have this big goal: crank up revenue fast. On the other, you’re navigating a market that’s slow to reward hustle — plus, your stakeholders sometimes have their own money issues to worry about.
So here’s the tension:
𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗺 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗮𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗺𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀?
𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘄 𝗰𝗮𝘀𝗵 𝗮𝘁 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗼𝗿 𝗵𝘂𝗻𝗸𝗲𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝘂𝗽?
𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘂𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁𝘀, 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗮 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲?
What I’ve realized is this phase isn’t just confusion. It's like clarity is sitting on a fence, waiting for you to push it one way or the other.
Both choices need guts:
🔹 Growth takes guts, belief, risk appetite, and resources.
🔹 Consolidation demands grit, patience, and the ability to swallow less-than-perfect numbers without freaking out.
You can’t sugarcoat it and try to do both at once. That’s exactly where morale tanks, priorities get fuzzy, and your team starts guessing what you actually want.
So what does leading here really mean?
🔹 Facing the cold, hard numbers without getting emotional.
🔹 Knowing what your team and org can handle without burning out.
🔹 Getting everyone — owners, leaders, crew — on the same page about how much risk they’re cool with.
🔹 Being straight up in your communication because people pick up on doubt long before you say it out loud.
At the end of the day, the big question is this:
𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀? 𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝗽 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲?
I’ve come to see this “undecided phase” as part of leadership you can’t skip. It forces you to call out assumptions. It drags tough talks into the light. And it clears the fog on what actually matters.
But I want to hear from you:
👉 𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗻𝘆?
👉 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘁𝘆𝗽𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝘂𝘀𝗵 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗯𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻?
👉 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗱, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗮𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱?
Seriously, I’d love to know how you deal with this tricky balancing act.
